About the Program

MiraCosta’s biomanufacturing bachelor’s degree program focuses on the manufacturing of biological products and prepares students for employment in technical, quality control, and regulatory affairs occupations in the biomanufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry, including biotherapeutics, diagnostics, supplies and services, and industrial products. Graduates also earn their Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification giving them a sought after skillset that will help them evolve with this fast-growing field. Did You Know?

MiraCosta College is one of only two California community colleges offering a bachelor’s degree in biomanufacturing and the only one in southern California.

MiraCosta’s biomanufacturing curriculum was developed in partnership with regional biotechnology employers to make sure students get the practical, workplace skills they need to grow and your business needs to thrive. Curriculum is updated regularly to keep up with the latest industry trends.

What Do Students Learn?

  • Design of experiments (JMP software, full factorial design, fractional factorial design, response surface methodology)
  • Aseptic technique (bacterial, yeast & mammalian cell culture)
  • TFF & column chromatography
  • Biomanufacturing facility design (Cleanrooms, Environmental Monitoring)
  • Investigations of deviations/CAPA
  • Supply chain management
  • GMP and ICH regulatory requirements
  • Introduction to automation for bioprocessing (DCS / PLC theory and PID tuning basics)
  • Upstream/downstream bioprocessing (bioreactor operation, chromatography purification)
  • Biostatistics (hypothesis testing, linear regression)
  • Genetic transformation and clonal selection
